Portuguese towns allocate millions to repair storm Kristin damage

The municipality of Mação in central Portugal says telecom services remain disrupted five months after the January storms, with fallen poles, cables on the ground and no fiber in some areas. The council estimates public‑sector losses of about €6 million and has urged national authorities and operators to act, noting the impact on fire services, civil protection and local businesses.

In the neighboring district of Leiria, the Ourém council approved roughly €500,000 to assist 14 parish councils in restoring damaged public equipment after the same storm. Officials said more than €1 million in losses were reported across most parishes, and the funding will cover 50 % of eligible repair costs, addressing the lack of direct state support for the local juntas.
