Portuguese towns launch cultural programs for senior care homes

The municipal library of Celorico da Beira visited the senior residence Lar de Açores on 4 August, reading the children's book “O Vendedor de Felicidade” by Davide Calì and Marco Somà. The session encouraged residents to reflect on what brings them happiness and to share memories, aiming to boost emotional wellbeing, cognitive stimulation and a sense of belonging.

In the municipality of Leiria, the “Memórias em Festa” programme is taking folk groups to local IPSS facilities throughout 2026. Performances feature traditional music, dance, songs, costumes and storytelling, with a participatory format that invites residents to join in, recall personal histories and reinforce cultural identity. Both initiatives are designed to promote active ageing, social inclusion and community connection for seniors.
