Portugal labor unions threaten protests over wage and service disputes

Tensions are rising in Portugal as various labor unions and professional groups express dissatisfaction with recent government negotiations regarding public sector wages and working conditions.

Public administration unions, including Frente Comum and Fesap, have criticized the government for failing to present new financial proposals for salary updates, describing recent meetings as “an absolute zero” in pecuniary matters. While the government has proposed a new timeline for reviewing general careers and travel allowances, unions are demanding higher increases to combat the rising cost of living. Fesap is seeking a 6.5% increase, while Frente Comum has proposed up to 15%.

In a separate labor dispute, the National Union of Sapador Firefighters (SNBS) has threatened national protests. They are contesting a government proposal that would leave the regulation of working hours and team reinforcement to the discretion of local municipalities rather than establishing national standards.

Additionally, the Union of Pre-Hospital Emergency Technicians (STEPH) has raised alarms regarding the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), alleging that over 60 ambulances are currently in workshops without repair orders. The union suspects the institute may be attempting to replace these vehicles with lighter vehicles instead of repairing them.
