Portuguese wildfires devastate central districts, spark solidarity from fire brigades and political parties

Wildfires that began in Tourelhe, in the parish of Cambra, spread to the municipalities of Vouzela, Oliveira de Frades, Tondela and Águeda in central Portugal. More than a thousand fire‑fighters and other operatives were deployed and thousands of hectares of forest and scrub were burned. Several people, including firefighters and civilians, were injured and a wood‑components factory employing 14 workers was completely destroyed, along with damage to poultry farms, agricultural holdings, homes, infrastructure and livestock.

The Federation of the Firefighters of the Porto District and the Portuguese Firefighters League issued statements of full solidarity with the volunteer fire corps of Santo Tirso and Paços de Ferreira, rejecting rumours of any conflict between their commanders and stressing the cooperation that existed during the operations.

The Viseu regional branch of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) also expressed solidarity with the affected populations and called for swift, unbureaucratic assistance. It urged the government and local authorities to assess damages promptly, protect jobs and salaries, and provide rapid compensation for farmers, small producers, businesses and residents, warning against repeating the delays seen after the 2017 fires.
