Portuguese wine and olive oil sectors face economic pressure
Portugal's strategic agri-food sectors, specifically wine and olive oil, are facing significant economic challenges despite high product quality. While Portuguese wines are gaining international recognition and awards, the industry is struggling with declining global consumption, production surpluses, and distribution difficulties. The Douro region, in particular, is reportedly experiencing a major crisis.
Simultaneously, the olive oil sector remains a vital economic pillar, with over 90% of production classified as extra virgin. However, both industries are operating under increasing instability caused by rising production costs, logistical tensions, and fierce global competition. To remain competitive, these sectors are increasingly turning toward technological innovation, including the use of Artificial Intelligence, to improve agricultural risk management and efficiency.
