Quinta da Bacalhôa, Portugal’s early Bordeaux‑inspired red blend first released in 1979, has seen renewed interest as the 2022 vintage was rediscovered at a discounted price and praised for its generous fruit, integrated oak and aging potential. The wine, originally crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines planted in 1974, now offers good value and a taste that recalls modern Cape blends.

At the same time, Portuguese sparkling wines are undergoing a silent but significant quality revolution. Improved vineyard techniques, careful grape selection, controlled fermentation, and investment in technology have elevated them to compete with top European producers. The industry emphasizes early harvest for acidity, manual picking, delicate pressing, and the traditional method of bottle fermentation, creating sparkling wines that combine freshness, balance, and longevity while maintaining a distinct Portuguese identity.
