Poste Italiane passport service reaches 256,000 requests in Italy

By 31 July 2026, Poste Italiane had processed 256 487 passport issuance and renewal requests through its nationwide service. The bulk of the work – 198 429 applications – was handled at 6 932 small‑town offices participating in the Polis project, while 58 058 were processed at 431 larger city post offices.

The service, launched first in municipalities with fewer than 15 000 residents and later extended to major urban centres via an agreement with the Ministry of the Interior, aims to bring public‑administration services closer to citizens. Verona province recorded the highest number of requests (17 123), followed by Bergamo (15 637), Vicenza (15 412) and Monza (10 860). The initiative has reduced travel distances for residents in remote areas, exemplified by Terranova di Pollino in Potenza province, where applicants previously had to travel up to 150 km.

Applicants must present a valid identity document, tax code, photograph and pay €42.70 plus a €73.50 telematic stamp, payable at post offices or online.
