Post‑meal drowsiness linked to insulin spikes and gut microbiome in Italy

Consuming foods rich in refined carbohydrates, such as pizza, white bread or sugary desserts, causes a rapid rise in blood glucose. The pancreas responds by releasing a large amount of insulin, which drives amino acids into muscles and leaves tryptophan free to cross the blood‑brain barrier. In the brain tryptophan is converted into serotonin and melatonin, hormones that promote relaxation and can produce a feeling of drowsiness even though clinical hypoglycaemia is rare.

Meals that are high in tryptophan‑rich foods (milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs, turkey, chicken, nuts and seeds) or that contain large amounts of refined carbs amplify this effect, especially when portions are large. The resulting quick glucose spike followed by a rapid decline further contributes to post‑prandial fatigue.

Research also shows that an imbalance in the gut microbiota can generate low‑grade inflammation that reaches the brain, reducing sleep quality and causing persistent fatigue despite adequate nighttime rest.
