PostModernism Museum examines myths surrounding Constantin Brâncuși

The PostModernism Museum, with funding from the Romanian Ministry of Culture, has concluded a cultural project titled ‘Myths and realities more or less true, with and about Brâncuși’ to mark the Brâncuși150 commemorative year. The initiative utilized documentary research to examine and challenge common myths surrounding the sculptor, such as his alleged walk to Paris, his identity as an ‘Orthodox sculptor,’ and his status as a ‘peasant prince.’

Through professional dialogues led by art historian Cosmin Nasui, various experts provided diverse perspectives on the artist. Cornel Mihalache, director of the ‘Constantin Brâncuși’ Center in Târgu Jiu, addressed nationalist instrumentalization and online misinformation regarding the artist. Historian Radu A. Pircă used medical reports and interviews to debunk myths regarding Brâncuși’s childhood poverty, while researcher Doina Lemny highlighted the lack of documentation regarding his early years. Additionally, architect Dorin Ștefan analyzed the work through spatial and proportional lenses, and researcher Dodo Niță discussed the artist's presence within the comic book medium.
