Cancer rates rise in younger populations due to accelerated biological aging
Medical research is highlighting a concerning trend of rising cancer rates among younger populations, often linked to accelerated biological aging. A study published in Nature Medicine, involving data from the UK Biobank and the All of Us program, suggests that younger generations are aging biologically faster than their chronological age. This biological gap is associated with increased risks for solid tumors, including lung, colorectal, and uterine cancers.
Specifically, accelerated aging of the immune system is linked to an 89% higher risk of lung cancer, while accelerated aging in adipose tissue correlates with a 60% increase in colorectal cancer risk. In Canada, colorectal cancer deaths among individuals aged 20 to 49 rose from 300 in 2000 to 442 in 2024.
Additionally, experts are warning about specific conditions like multiple myeloma, a bone marrow malignancy. Dr. Jelena Bila noted that 43% of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients are under 65. Other specialists, such as oncologist Dr. Jiri Kubes, advise that persistent, non-mechanical back pain in adults over 50 should be investigated, as it can be a symptom of various cancers spreading to the bone.
