Potassium-rich foods for cardiovascular health and blood pressure management

To protect the cardiovascular system and manage blood pressure, health authorities such as the World Health Organization and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommend a daily potassium intake of approximately 3,500 milligrams for adults. Potassium plays a critical role in muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and fluid balance, working in opposition to sodium to help the body eliminate excess salt.

While bananas are commonly associated with potassium, they are not the most concentrated source. A medium banana provides about 420 milligrams, which is only roughly 12% of the daily requirement. Other foods offer significantly higher concentrations:

• Pistachios: Provide approximately 1,025 milligrams per 100 grams. • Potatoes: A medium 200-gram cooked potato with skin contains about 800 milligrams. • Legumes: A 200-gram serving of cooked lentils or white beans provides around 740 milligrams. • Leafy Greens: Spinach is noted as a significant source of the mineral.

Experts suggest that meeting daily targets is best achieved by distributing these various food sources across breakfast, lunch, and dinner rather than relying on a single food item or supplements.
