Potato golden beetle threatens Croatian vegetable farms, experts recommend control methods
The potato golden beetle (Krumpirova zlatica) is an invasive pest native to the Colorado River region of North America. It was first recorded in Croatia in the late 1940s and is now one of the most persistent threats to domestic vegetable crops. Adults are about one centimetre long with yellowish wing covers marked by ten black longitudinal stripes. The beetle primarily attacks potatoes but also feeds on other Solanaceae such as eggplant, tomato and pepper, as well as related weeds. Larvae and adult beetles strip foliage, which can severely reduce tuber development and overall yields.
Life‑cycle details include egg laying on the underside of leaves, larvae feeding for two to three weeks, then pupating in the soil. Depending on temperature, two to three generations may develop in a single season, and the beetle can quickly acquire resistance to insecticides. Consequently, experts advise regular scouting and early intervention. Recommended measures are hand‑picking adults and larvae into a soapy water, crushing egg clusters, rotating crops and avoiding planting potatoes on the same site each year, intercropping with non‑solanaceous plants, and applying a thick straw mulch to hinder beetle movement while supporting beneficial insects. Biological control using Bacillus thuringiensis var. formulations is also effective, especially in organic farming.
