Potato harvesting and storage techniques for gardeners
Proper potato harvesting and storage techniques are essential for ensuring tubers last through the winter. For storage varieties like Bintje or Désirée, gardeners should wait for the foliage to yellow and dry completely, which typically occurs in September. This period allows the skin of the tuber to thicken, creating a protective barrier against moisture and microorganisms.
Harvesting should ideally be performed in dry weather. To avoid damage, gardeners should use a fork to lift the soil carefully and detach tubers by hand. It is important to remove any tubers damaged by tools or rodents, as these will not store well and should be consumed immediately.
For long-term storage, tubers should be left to dry in the sun for a few hours without being washed. After a period of one to two weeks in a dry, dark, and well-ventilated area at approximately 15°C to allow the skin to firm up, they can be moved to a cool cellar or storage area maintained at 4°C to 6°C.
