Potato storage: Using apples to prevent sprouting
To keep potatoes fresh throughout the winter, a traditional household method involves placing a fresh, healthy apple in the same storage container or bag as the potatoes. This works because ripe apples release ethylene gas, which can slow down the sprouting process of the potatoes.
For the method to be effective, the apple must remain fresh; a rotting apple can actually accelerate the spoilage of the entire potato stock. Additionally, potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, and well-ventilated area at temperatures between 4–6 degrees Celsius. Avoiding light is crucial to prevent greening, which increases solanine levels, making the potatoes unsafe for consumption. It is also recommended not to wash potatoes before long-term storage, as the natural layer of soil helps maintain moisture.
