Potential Tropical Cyclone One threatens Texas, Louisiana with heavy rain and flood risk

A low‑pressure system over northeastern Mexico has moved into southern Texas and been classified by the National Hurricane Center as Potential Tropical Cyclone One. Forecasts give the disturbance a 40 % chance of developing into a tropical storm within 48 hours and up to 50 % over the next week. The system is expected to bring tropical‑storm‑force winds and heavy rainfall, with predicted totals of 4‑8 inches and isolated amounts of up to 12 inches along the Texas Gulf Coast.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the northwestern Texas Gulf Coast from Sargent, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana, and a Flood Watch covers coastal counties in Texas and southwestern Louisiana through Thursday. Meteorologists warn that the rain could trigger life‑threatening flash, urban and river flooding, while gusty winds and coastal flooding may affect parts of the northwestern Gulf Coast, including portions of Mississippi.

The disturbance is projected to move offshore tonight, run parallel to the Texas coast on Wednesday, and return inland in extreme eastern Texas or southwestern Louisiana by Thursday, after which weakening is expected.
