Poultry prices surge across Morocco and Algeria
Poultry prices have seen significant increases in Morocco and Algeria, driven by seasonal demand and environmental challenges.
In Morocco, chicken prices have risen above 20 dirhams per kilogram, reaching 21 dirhams in parts of Casablanca. Khalid Rabti of the Interprofessional Federation of the Poultry Sector attributed the surge to increased summer demand fueled by weddings and festivities, which has helped rebalance supply and demand after clearing accumulated stocks.
In Algeria, white meat prices have reached record highs, with fresh chicken exceeding 600 dinars per kilogram. Ali Benchaiba, president of the Federation of Poultry Farmers, cited extreme summer heat, regional fires, and electricity outages as primary causes. These factors damaged ventilation systems in poultry farms, leading to high mortality rates and disease outbreaks. Additionally, delays in import programs for production inputs and previous financial losses by farmers during periods of low prices have contributed to the current shortage and price hike.
