North African food price inflation and regulatory response

Overview

Poultry and essential food prices have surged across North Africa, particularly in Morocco and Algeria. In Morocco, chicken prices have risen above 20 dirhams per kilogram, reaching 21 dirhams in parts of Casablanca. Khalid Rabti of the Interprofessional Federation of the Poultry Sector attributed this to increased summer demand from weddings and festivities, which helped rebalance supply and demand after clearing accumulated stocks.

In Algeria, white meat prices reached record highs, with fresh chicken exceeding 600 dinars per kilogram. Ali Benchaiba, president of the Federation of Poultry Farmers, cited extreme summer heat, regional fires, and electricity outages as factors that damaged farm ventilation systems, leading to high mortality rates and disease outbreaks. Other contributing factors included delays in import programs for production inputs and previous financial losses among farmers.

As inflation expanded to include staples like tomatoes and potatoes, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune addressed discrepancies between producer prices and retail costs. In some areas of Algiers, potatoes have reached 130 to 150 dinars per kilogram, while tomatoes have been reported at 170 to 200 dinars. A merchant in France, Fayçal Ouchen, highlighted domestic supply chain inefficiencies by selling Algerian grapes for 0.99 euros per kilo, a price significantly lower than the 450 dinars per kilo seen in some Algerian markets.

In response, the Algerian government has intensified market controls. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb has integrated wholesale operators into a new monitoring system and is now delegating market regulation mechanisms to local walis to monitor distribution and crack down on illegal speculation. Meanwhile, the consumer protection organization Himayatec has called for a shift from reactive interventions toward a permanent regulatory framework to protect low-income families.
