Naples Man Arrested for 42 Elderly Phone Scams in Central Italy

A 27‑year‑old Neapolitan was arrested in Viareggio after a Carabinieri investigation linked him to 42 telephone‑based frauds targeting seniors aged between 54 and 96. The scams, carried out across Rome, Lazio, Campania and Tuscany, used tactics such as the “fake grandson” and “fake postal operator” to persuade victims to hand over cash and gold. One 81‑year‑old woman was duped out of €14,000 and 200 g of gold. Authorities seized phone‑books, mobile devices, €10,000 in cash and valuable watches from the suspect’s home in Naples, estimating the total illicit proceeds at more than €300,000.
