Power outage protests erupt in Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Residents of the Villas del Sol subdivision in Playa del Carmen blocked several major road intersections on Saturday night and early Sunday to demand an end to repeated electricity outages. The protesters placed stones, tires and other objects on the roads, some of which were set on fire, before the blockades were lifted after power was restored. They reported that the blackouts had spoiled food, damaged appliances and air‑conditioners, and worsened heat‑related discomfort.
Local councilor Juan Novelo Zapata blamed the federal utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) for a lack of investment in local infrastructure, saying the utility had failed to build new substations despite rapid population growth in Playa del Carmen and the wider state of Quintana Roo. He also noted that recent tariff increases followed the removal of subsidies and warned that further protests could occur if outages continue. CFE had not provided an official cause for the interruption; unofficial reports suggested a possible failure at the El Edén substation.
