Power outages trigger water supply crises in Monclova and Veracruz, Mexico

In Monclova, Coahuila, the wastewater‑treatment plant owned by CEAS and rented to Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA) ceased operation after CFE cut electricity over unpaid bills. The shutdown has forced millions of liters of untreated, fecal‑laden water into the Monclova River and the Frontera stream, creating a serious sanitary emergency for thousands of residents who report foul odors, skin and respiratory problems, and demand emergency health monitoring.

In the Veracruz metropolitan area, including Veracruz city, Boca del Río and Medellín de Bravo, the El Tejar water‑treatment plants were taken offline on 26 July following an electricity failure. The outage halted production of potable water, resulting in low pressure or complete loss of service for many households. Grupo MAS Agua, the concessionaire, confirmed power has been restored and is working to resume water supply while keeping residents informed of restoration progress.
