Powerball jackpot reaches $1 billion after consecutive rollovers
The Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated $1 billion for the August 12 drawing, marking the eighth-largest jackpot in the game's history and the largest in the United States for 2026. The prize follows a streak of 43 consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner since May 2.
Winners have the choice between a 30-year annuity or a one-time cash payout. For the current $1 billion jackpot, the estimated cash option is approximately $433.1 million before federal and state taxes. While the jackpot is massive, the actual take-home amount will be significantly lower due to mandatory federal withholdings and potential state taxes.
The game has recently expanded its reach internationally, with ticket sales now available in the United Kingdom through an agreement between the Multi-State Lottery Association and Allwyn UK. In the UK, the jackpot is advertised as approximately £503 million, reflecting the estimated value over a 30-year period after exchange rates and local tax requirements.
Despite the lack of a jackpot winner in recent draws, several players have secured significant secondary prizes. In Maryland, multiple tickets have won $1 million each, and one player won $150,000 after applying the Power Play multiplier.
