Powys schools close amid UK heatwave

A further 12 schools in Powys have been ordered to close on June 25 as temperatures peak during a severe heatwave, bringing the total number of affected schools in the county to 46. The closures, announced by Powys County Council, include full‑day and afternoon shutdowns across locations such as Machynlleth, Builth, Hay and Brecon, where forecasts predict temperatures of 35 °C and potentially up to 40 °C. The Met Office has issued a red warning for extreme heat, the first such alert in its history.

The council’s decision reflects concerns for student safety and the capacity of school facilities to operate under extreme temperatures. Parents have been advised to keep children hydrated and to monitor local updates as the heatwave continues through the week.
