DEI and AWS to develop mega data center in Western Macedonia

Public Power Corporation (PPC/DEI) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have signed a binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a large-scale data center in Agios Dimitrios, Western Macedonia, Greece. The project aims to repurpose former lignite mining areas into a digital and energy hub.

The initial phase of the development will feature a power capacity of 300 MW, with plans to expand the facility to a total capacity of up to 1 GW depending on market conditions. The total investment is estimated at approximately €2.3 billion, with DEI contributing roughly €1.2 billion for buildings and energy infrastructure, and AWS investing approximately €1.1 billion for IT infrastructure and equipment.

Under the agreement, DEI will provide the land, buildings, and supporting energy infrastructure, while AWS will be responsible for installing and operating the IT systems. AWS will lease the completed data center from DEI under a 15-year long-term contract. To support Amazon’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, AWS will purchase electricity from DEI through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) sourced from renewable energy. The first phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
