Spain battles numerous forest fires amid soaring summer heat
Across Spain, dozens of forest fires have erupted as early‑summer temperatures rise and dry conditions spread. By 21 June 2026, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition reported that 39,709 ha had burned, more than double the same period last year, with 4,287 fire incidents recorded nationwide.
Severe outbreaks occurred in several regions: the Forcall blaze in Castellón was stabilized after intensive aerial and ground effort; the Tamarite de Litera fire in Aragon remains under surveillance with three water‑bombers and ground crews; La Llitera in Aragon stays stabilized with ongoing monitoring; Huertezuelas (Calzada de Calatrava) required 10 aircraft, 18 ground units and 109 personnel; and in the Bierzo comarca of León, more than 1,600 ha have been scorched, prompting the deployment of over 400 firefighters and 90 suppression assets.
Authorities have activated alerts, restricted road access, and warned residents to avoid affected zones. Emergency services continue ventilation, cooling and containment tasks, while meteorological forecasts predict high temperatures, low humidity and occasional storms that could influence fire behaviour.
