Prague celebrates Václav Havel with festivals and theatrical premieres
Prague is hosting various cultural tributes to Václav Havel, marking what would have been the former president's 90th birthday. The Havel ALIVE festival will take place at Prague Castle from October through January, featuring music, design, and public debates. A major highlight is the Czech premiere of ‘The Warning’, an unfinished play by Havel that remained hidden for nearly 40 years.
Additionally, the Laterna magika of the National Theatre is presenting the Czech premiere of ‘Perpetuum Havel’ at the Akropolis Palace. Based on Havel’s experiences in detention in 1989, the performance uses movement theater to depict the internal experience of a prisoner. The production includes projections of faces of contemporary political prisoners from various countries, a selection made in collaboration with Amnesty International.
