Prague transport network faces extensive summer repairs

The city of Prague is undergoing a series of major infrastructure works that are disrupting traffic and public transport this summer.

A reconstruction of the tram line linking Chotkovy Sady, Prague Castle and Brusnice is underway, with works expected to continue through July 2026. At the same time, the main railway station is being overhauled: the historic Fantova building and the station hall’s roof are being rebuilt, a project funded by an European Investment Bank loan and the State Transport Infrastructure Fund, with total costs of about CZK 666 million and completion slated for 2029.

The city's second‑most‑used bridge, Hlávka Bridge, has begun repairs to strengthen corroded concrete deck plates. The work, scheduled until 31 August, will close the bridge to trams and limit car traffic to a single lane in the direction toward Holešovice.

Separately, extreme heat caused asphalt to soften on the tram track between Florenc and Karlín, damaging the bogies of two trams and halting service on that section. The city’s transport authority is clearing the debris and has advised passengers to use the metro or rerouted tram lines.

Combined, these projects are expected to cause significant but temporary inconvenience for commuters throughout the summer months.
