Premier League to increase officiating transparency with new measures

The Premier League is introducing several measures to increase transparency regarding refereeing and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions. For the first time, the full judgements from the Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel will be made public. This five-member panel has been assessing major incidents since the 2022-23 season, but its findings were previously kept private.

Additionally, the league will publish direct quotes and rationales from referees and VAR officials on its official website, app, and Match Centre account on X. This aims to provide fans with the actual thought processes behind controversial decisions rather than just general summaries.

The use of RefCam technology will also expand to include audio of conversations between referees and players. These audio clips will not be broadcast live but will be featured in up to two matches per week following specific incidents. However, due to International Football Association Board (IFAB) regulations, audio from communications between referees and the VAR system will remain restricted from public broadcast.

Other rule changes for the upcoming season include adjustments to game tempo, such as a five-second limit for throw-ins and updated protocols for player substitutions and injury timeouts.
