Prensa Latina and TeleSUR advocate for South-South AI cooperation in China

In Shanghai, China, representatives from Prensa Latina and TeleSUR emphasized the necessity of South-South cooperation to address the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI). Alejandro Gómez, Vice President of Prensa Latina, stated that technological advancements involve issues of technological sovereignty, information independence, and the autonomy of developing nations.

Gómez highlighted China as a strategic partner for media outlets in the Global South due to its progress in AI and opportunities for technology transfer and professional training. He warned that reliance on foreign-developed technologies could limit communicational autonomy and reduce linguistic and cultural diversity in news content.

To address these concerns, Gómez proposed establishing a permanent professional training mechanism in AI for journalists and media organizations within the Global South. This initiative would involve cooperation with Chinese institutions to share expertise, develop technical capacities, and create AI solutions tailored to the specific cultural and linguistic needs of participating countries.
