Global South media cooperation in China

Overview

Media organizations from the Global South are seeking to increase technological sovereignty and informational independence through cooperation with China.

Initially, representatives from Prensa Latina and TeleSUR advocated for South-South cooperation in Shanghai. Alejandro Gómez, Vice President of Prensa Latina, emphasized that technological advancements involve issues of “technological sovereignty, information independence, and the autonomy of developing nations.” He proposed a permanent professional training mechanism in artificial intelligence (AI) to help journalists in the Global South develop technical capacities and AI solutions tailored to specific cultural and linguistic needs.

Following these discussions, the Global South Media Center (CMPSur) was officially established in China. The center was founded by Prensa Latina, teleSUR, Brasil de Fato, and Pan Africa TV. According to Jeff Xiong, Secretary-General of the Global South Academic Forum, the initiative aims to strengthen joint journalistic production and build narratives from the perspective of the people, while challenging the discursive frameworks of Northern Hemisphere media.
