President Bola Tinubu Announces New Nigerian Army Divisions to Boost Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the creation of four additional divisions for the Nigerian Army, bringing the total number of divisions to twelve. He said the expansion will enable the military to respond more quickly to attacks and insecurity across the country, and made the statement while receiving traditional rulers of the Oyo State Council of Obas, led by the Olubadan of Ibadan.

Analysts note that the move follows a prior presidential approval to recruit 28,000 new soldiers, but warn that funding, equipment and logistics for both the new and existing divisions remain inadequate. They argue that without proper resources the new formations may not improve combat effectiveness against bandits, insurgents and other criminal groups operating in ungoverned areas.
