President Bola Tinubu Boosts Infrastructure in Nigeria's South‑East

Three years into President Bola Tinubu's administration, the federal government is intensifying development in Nigeria's South‑East. Major road projects such as the Enugu‑Onitsha Expressway, the Calabar‑Ebonyi‑Benue Trans‑Saharan Superhighway, the Enugu‑Port Harcourt Road and access roads to the Second Niger Bridge are being renewed or constructed to reduce historic federal neglect.

The Eastern Rail Corridor, linking Port Harcourt to Maiduguri with a priority segment through the South‑East, is also being advanced, reviving a long‑dormant rail line. Energy initiatives include the inclusion of South‑East states in the Siemens Power project and the development of the Assa North‑Ohaji South (ANOH) gas project, one of Nigeria's largest natural‑gas facilities. Minister of Works Engineer Dave Umahi highlighted that many of these projects were originally planned during the colonial era.

These infrastructure investments aim to reshape the political map of the South‑East by improving trade hubs such as Onitsha, Aba and Nnewi, and by strengthening federal presence in a region that traditionally voted overwhelmingly for opposition parties.
