Mozambique President Daniel Chapo addresses economic and judicial reforms

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has emphasized the need for economic growth to outpace the country’s 2.5 percent annual population growth to avoid a potential social and economic disaster. Speaking at the Conference on Population and Development in Maputo, Chapo noted that the population has grown from 10 million in 1975 to approximately 35 million in 2026, with projections reaching 60 million by 2050. He stressed that capturing the demographic dividend requires significant investment in education, healthcare, vocational training, and job creation, particularly for women and youth.

In a separate push for institutional reform, President Chapo reaffirmed a policy of “zero tolerance” toward corruption. He advocated for the creation of specialized courts to handle complex and organized crime, including terrorism, money laundering, and human trafficking. He also expressed concern regarding judicial delays and excessive bureaucracy, calling for a more efficient and accessible justice system to maintain public trust.

Additionally, the government announced plans to launch a digital platform within 90 days to monitor social and demographic development goals. This tool will track key indicators such as fertility rates, early marriages, and youth employment levels to ensure accountability in meeting national development commitments.
