President Droupadi Murmu begins historic three‑nation European visit

President Droupadi Murmu departed New Delhi on 19 July 2026 for official state visits to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania. The tour marks the first Indian presidential visit to both Moldova and North Macedonia and the first to Romania in more than three decades. In Moldova, she arrived on 20 July, meeting President Maia Sandu and parliamentary leader Igor Grosu, and addressed a business forum aimed at expanding cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, IT and education. The visit continued to North Macedonia on 21‑22 July, where she met President Gordana Siljanovska‑Davkova, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and parliamentary officials, and spoke at an India‑North Macedonia business forum covering similar sectors. The final leg in Romania took place from 23‑25 July, featuring talks with President Nicolae Ciucă and further promotion of trade and technology ties. Security measures in Chișinău included temporary road and public‑access restrictions to ensure the safety of the official delegation. The multi‑nation trip underscores India’s expanding diplomatic and economic engagement with Central and Eastern Europe and aligns with its broader strategic partnership with the European Union.
