India President Murmu European Tour
Overview
Indian President Droupou Murmu departed New Delhi on 19 July 2026 for a three‑nation state visit to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania – the first Indian head‑of‑state trip to both Moldova and North Macedonia and the first presidential visit to Romania in more than three decades.
In Chișinău on 20 July she met President Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, addressed the India‑Moldova Business Forum, presented a bust of Mahatma Gandhi and laid a wreath at the Stefan cel Mare monument. A memorandum on higher‑education cooperation was signed and both sides reiterated plans to double bilateral trade, emphasizing renewable energy, digital technologies, AI, fintech, healthcare and agriculture.
The itinerary continued in Skopje on 21‑22 July. Murmu was welcomed by President Gordana Siljanovska‑Davkova with the highest state and military honors, held a private one‑to‑one meeting followed by a plenary session, and was joined by Foreign Trade Minister Timcho Mucunski and Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski. The talks broadened cooperation across economics, education, science, culture, tourism, health and digital transformation, and added concrete targets to double trade and explore sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, IT and film, citing Macedonia’s strategic location and EU market access for Indian investment. Murmu addressed the Assembly, participated in the India‑North Macedonia Business Forum and noted temporary traffic restrictions for security.
In Bucharest from 23‑25 July she held talks with President Nicolae Ciucă, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and parliamentary leaders, and joined the India‑Romania Business Forum. Across the three countries Murmu urged “partnerships built on trust and shared prosperity” and invited Moldovan firms to explore opportunities in India. The tour underscores India’s expanding diplomatic and economic engagement with Central and Eastern Europe and its broader strategic partnership with the European Union.
