Tufan Erhürman reaffirms commitment to Cyprus negotiations

TRNC President Tufan Erhürman has reaffirmed his commitment to the Cyprus peace process, stating he will not abandon the negotiating table during his five-year term. This follows a series of diplomatic meetings in New York during the 81st UN General Assembly, where Erhürman declined a proposed trilateral meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodulides.

Erhürman argued that a meeting would lack meaningful progress because Christodulides offered 19 new proposals instead of focusing on the seven confidence-building measures previously suggested by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Erhürman characterized the introduction of these new items as counterproductive to the existing framework.

UN Personal Representative Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar noted that the window of opportunity for progress on the island is rapidly closing, citing a lack of political will and a hostile environment. Erhürman emphasized that he seeks result-oriented discussions, such as 3+1 or 5+1 formats, rather than meetings held merely for diplomatic appearances.
