Elor Azaria presidential pardon Hebron shooting Israeli military manslaughter conviction

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has issued a pardon to Elor Azaria, a former combat medic, by shortening the period required to expunge his criminal record. The decision, announced on the eve of Yom Kippur, follows a request from Defense Minister Israel Katz. The pardon allows Azaria to clear his record, which would otherwise have remained until 2032.

Azaria was convicted of manslaughter in 2017 for the 2016 shooting of Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, a wounded Palestinian man in Hebron. Video footage showed Azaria shooting al-Sharif in the head while the latter lay incapacitated on the ground. Azaria served nine months of a reduced 14-month sentence and was released in 2018.

The move has caused significant friction within the Israeli military. Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and other senior officers opposed the pardon, stating that Azaria has failed to express genuine remorse or take responsibility for his actions a decade after the conviction. Conversely, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Defense Minister Israel Katz welcomed the decision, framing it as a humane act that supports soldiers and their families.
