President Lula's May‑June 2026 Trips Omit Maranhão and Most Northeast States

Between May and June 2026, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took part in 47 presidential commitments outside the routine of the Palácio do Planalto, comprising 44 domestic events and three abroad (the United States, France and Paraguay). The agenda was heavily weighted toward the Southeast, with São Paulo leading at 12 events, followed by Rio de Janeiro and other southeastern locales.

The Northeast received minimal attention: Maranhão and six fellow states – Alagoas, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí and Rio Grande do Norte – were absent from the itinerary. Only Bahia and Sergipe recorded presidential visits. The most frequent topics were health, industry, infrastructure and agribusiness, including hospital tours, refinery openings and announcements of investment projects.

The travel record comes as Brazil approaches the election period, when electoral law will soon restrict candidates from attending public‑work inaugurations, although it does not limit official presidential trips.
