Lula intensifies defence push amid PT campaign

Overview

Late‑June polls show President Luiz Inácio Lula retaining a narrow lead over Flávio Bolsonaro for the 2026 presidency, with regional polarisation persisting. Within the Workers’ Party, the Minas Gerais governorship remains undecided after a failed attempt to agree on a candidate, prompting the party to run its own nominee. Lula’s May‑June tour focused on the Southeast, especially São Paulo, and his official launch is set for 16 August in São Bernardo do Campo.

On 24 July Lula visited the Avibras Aeroco plant in Jacareí, urging a major increase in defence investment. Citing the 19th‑century Paraguayan War, he linked modernising the armed forces to national sovereignty, economic resilience and regional security, and referenced recent U.S. tariff measures and the need for domestic rare‑earth and critical‑mineral supply chains. Avibras, back in production after a three‑year shutdown, now employs about 500 workers and supplies missiles, rockets and specialised vehicles to Brazil’s navy, air force and export customers.

The PT’s mobilisation continued. After stops in Rio de Janeiro and participation in the PSB national convention in Brasília, the party held regional gatherings in Ceará and Bahia. On 31 July a PT convention in Bahia approved its 2026 candidate slate, including Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues’s re‑election bid and former ministers Jaques Wagner and Rui Costa for the Senate, aiming to build a strong parliamentary bloc. At the same time, Lula signalled he may skip the first‑round presidential debates; Senator Teresa Leitão urged his participation, noting its strategic importance for the party’s electoral plan.
