Ghanaian President Mahama addresses Non-Aligned Movement summit in Belgrade

President John Dramani Mahama attended the 65th anniversary summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Belgrade, Serbia. During the high-level meeting, Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s commitment to non-alignment should not be interpreted as neutrality in the face of injustice, conflict, or the erosion of international law.

Mahama criticized the international community for what he termed “selectivity and indifference” regarding humanitarian crises. He specifically called for the universal enforcement of international law in Sudan and Gaza, and demanded an end to the long-standing economic embargo against Cuba. He argued that the current international system often applies rules unevenly based on political convenience.

Addressing modern challenges, Mahama urged NAM member states to strengthen coordination to tackle climate change, digital inequality, and the growing divide in artificial intelligence technology. He advocated for moving from mere declarations to practical, coordinated diplomatic action to protect the interests of the Global South in a multipolar world.

Reflecting on the movement’s history, Mahama paid tribute to founding leaders, including Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, noting that the movement’s original goal of maintaining independent foreign policies remains vital today.
