Non-Aligned Movement summit in Belgrade
Overview
The 65th anniversary summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Belgrade has brought together representatives from over 30 delegations to reaffirm principles of sovereign equality, non-interference, and multilateralism. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić addressed the assembly, describing the movement as a “vital bastion of multilateralism” and noting that many NAM member states continue to respect Serbia’s territorial integrity.
During the proceedings, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called for increased international solidarity to address terrorism, geopolitical tensions, and climate change. Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama also participated, emphasizing that Ghana’s commitment to non-alignment should not be viewed as neutrality in the face of injustice. Mahama criticized the international community for “selectivity and indifference” regarding humanitarian crises, specifically calling for the universal enforcement of international law in Sudan and Gaza, and an end to the economic embargo against Cuba.
President Vučić hosted a commemorative dinner, stating that while the global landscape has changed, the importance of sovereignty and international law remains constant. He noted that Serbia pursues an independent foreign policy while remaining open to nations that respect its choices. The summit proceedings included an opening by Vučić alongside Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo.
Parallel to the main summit, Serbian Prime Minister Đuro Macut engaged in bilateral meetings with officials from India, Mozambique, and Cameroon regarding infrastructure, defense, agriculture, and IT. Additionally, Montenegrin officials met with US representatives to discuss a Government-to-Government agreement focused on the Adriatic-Ionian corridor and modernized border controls.
