President Nicușor Dan's weakened office fuels Romanian deadlock

Romania has been without a functioning government since the Bolojan cabinet fell on 5 May 2026 after a no‑confidence motion supported by the PSD and AUR. In the 87 days that followed, two prime ministers were named – Eugen Tomac on 4 June and Adrian Veștea later that morning – but both failed to secure parliamentary approval, leaving the presidency unable to appoint a successor.

President Nicușor Dan, standing alone without party backing, has been criticised for his limited autonomy and for repeatedly attempting, without success, to install a new premier. The political stalemate has been described by insiders as a period in which “nothing was resolved,” highlighting the erosion of presidential authority and the broader institutional weakening of Romania’s democratic system.
