President Prabowo Unveils Nationwide Village Cooperative Plan at 79th National Cooperative Day
On 12 July 2026, President Prabowo Subianto addressed the 79th National Cooperative Day at Indonesia Arena, Gelora Bung Karnо, Jakarta, alongside ministers, security chiefs and other officials. He announced a programme to establish roughly 81 000 Red‑and‑White Village Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa Merah Putih) in every Indonesian village. The cooperatives are projected to circulate about Rp 223 trillion (US $12.3 billion) a year and raise producers’ incomes by up to Rp 202 trillion, especially for farmers, livestock breeders and fishers.
Prabowo described the cooperatives as integrated hubs offering savings‑and‑loan services, grocery stores, village pharmacies with affordable generic medicines, logistics, warehouses and cold‑storage facilities. He stressed that all government‑subsidised goods must be channelled through the cooperatives to prevent misuse and to reach the intended recipients.
The event also featured a youth‑focused “Brand Ambassador” drive by the Dewan Koperasi Indonesia to modernise the cooperative image. In parallel, Indonesia Corruption Watch warned that the procurement of 80 000 pickup trucks for the cooperatives may involve a rent‑seeking margin of up to Rp 5.5 trillion, urging a pause and full transparency.
Overall, the president linked the cooperative push to breaking villagers’ dependence on predatory lenders, rejecting neoliberal policies, and urging national unity and mutual assistance.
