President Tinubu directs EFCC to unfreeze Osun State accounts
President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to unfreeze the accounts of the Osun State Government. The accounts had been frozen on August 5, 2026, as part of an investigation into the alleged fraudulent handling of approximately N11 billion in ecology funds, intervention funds, and federal allocations.
President Tinubu issued the directive to vacate the court order, citing concerns that the timing of the EFCC's action—occurring just days before the Osun governorship election—could create an impression of federal interference in the electoral process. Following the presidential order, the lien on the accounts was lifted.
The intervention has sparked significant debate regarding the independence of anti-graft agencies and the constitutional limits of presidential authority. While some view the move as a necessary step to ensure electoral neutrality, critics and opposition figures have characterized it as an unconstitutional interference with the EFCC's statutory mandate.
