President Trump signs AI executive order to boost innovation and cybersecurity

On June 2, 2026 President Trump issued an Executive Order titled “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security.” The order seeks to reinforce U.S. leadership in AI by encouraging voluntary, industry‑collaborative development while enhancing cyber defenses for federal systems and critical‑infrastructure entities.

Within 30 days, the order directs the Department of Homeland Security and CISA to issue binding operational directives that expand AI‑enabled defensive tools to federal agencies, state and local governments, rural hospitals, community banks and local utilities. It also establishes an AI cybersecurity clearinghouse, led by the Treasury, to coordinate vulnerability scanning and patch distribution.

The order creates a new designation, “covered frontier models,” for AI systems that meet a classified threshold of advanced cyber capability. Within 60 days, the Treasury, NSA and CISA must develop a benchmarking process to evaluate such models. Developers can voluntarily submit their models for government assessment, after which the government has up to 30 days to work with the model before the developer can share it with trusted partners.

The policy marks a shift from the previous Biden administration’s AI framework, emphasizing voluntary collaboration over mandatory licensing, pre‑clearance or permitting requirements.
