Donald Trump pushes Senate to pass Protect College Sports Act

Former President Donald Trump has publicly urged the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to approve the Protect College Sports Act. The legislation would create a federal regulatory framework for name, image and likeness (NIL) agreements, transfers and pay‑for‑play arrangements for student‑athletes, and would align federal law with statutes in 27 states that protect women’s sports and bar men from competing in women’s categories.

The bill, introduced as S. 4668 by a bipartisan group of senators including Ted Cruz, Maria Cantwell, Eric Schmitt and Chris Coons, was referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, which reported an amendment on June 24. A companion House measure, H.R. 9137, was introduced by Rep. Gus M. Bilirakis and sent to the Judiciary, Energy and Commerce, and Education and Workforce committees. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the act would establish a nationwide NIL regulatory system.

Trump has warned that without the act, “millions of young athletes will be hurt, programs will be canceled, women’s and Olympic sports will disappear, fans will be robbed and universities will go broke,” emphasizing the bill’s importance for protecting women’s athletics.
