PrevenTRON study tests drug to prevent Alzheimer's

The PrevenTRON study, an international phase III clinical trial, is investigating whether the drug Trontinemab can prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in individuals who do not yet show symptoms. The trial aims to recruit approximately 1,600 participants aged 55 to 80 globally.

Participants will be screened for the p-tau217 biomarker via blood tests. Research indicates that high levels of this biomarker can predict cognitive decline with significant accuracy. Those identified with elevated levels may be prescribed Trontinemab, a drug developed by the Swiss company Roche. The medication works by attacking amyloid plaques, which are toxic proteins that accumulate in the brain and damage cells.

In the United Kingdom, the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS foundation trust will begin screening the first European participants. Early research into Trontinemab has shown it successfully cleared amyloid plaques in 90% of individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s or mild cognitive development within 28 weeks.
