Alzheimer's disease prevention research

The international PrevenTRON Phase III clinical trial is investigating the efficacy of the drug Trontinemab in preventing the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in asymptomatic individuals. The study aims to recruit approximately 1,600 participants aged 55 to 80 globally, using blood tests to screen for the p-tau217 biomarker to identify those at risk.

Developed by Roche, Trontinemab targets amyloid plaques in the brain. Early research indicated the medication successfully cleared these plaques in 90% of individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s or mild cognitive development within 28 weeks. In the United Kingdom, the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS foundation trust is set to begin screening the first European participants.

Broader medical trends show a shift toward early intervention and disease-modifying therapies through precision medicine. Experts in Spain note that integrating biomarkers, imaging, and artificial intelligence allows for more personalized treatment, though stakeholders warn that healthcare systems must improve infrastructure to ensure equitable access to these technological advancements.
