Mexico's INE bans 'narcopartido' label for Morena, sparking PRI backlash

The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) Commission of Complaints and Denunciations ordered the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) to delete social‑media posts that labeled the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) as a “narcopartido.” The decision, announced in late July, required the removal of five posts from PRI leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas and four from official PRI accounts, and nine posts were later identified for removal.

Alejandro Moreno denounced the ruling as censorship that restricts freedom of expression, accusing the INE of silencing opposition and claiming Morena’s “hands are stained with blood” and that it serves as the execution arm of organized crime. He vowed not to be silenced, warned that “for criminals there are only two places: prison or the cemetery,” and called for a national front to defend democracy.

President Claudia Sheinbaum praised the INE resolution as a major achievement of her government, saying it protects truthful political debate. Morena senator Ricardo Monreal called the accusations an “infame campaign” and affirmed the INE’s legal correctness. PAN coordinator Alfredo Chávez declared he will continue to call Morena a “narcopartido” despite the ruling. PRI leaders in Puebla, including Xitlalic Ceja, warned that the order threatens freedom of expression and urged vigilance against censorship.
