Prienai Mayor Alvydas Vaicekauskas convicted of fraud

The Alytus District Court has found Alvydas Vaicekauskas, the Mayor of Prienai District, guilty in a case involving fraudulent expense claims. Vaicekauskas was convicted of document forgery, abuse of office, and fraud.

According to the investigation by the Special Investigation Service (STT), between December 2019 and March 2023, Vaicekauskas submitted falsified reports regarding fuel expenses to the municipal accounting department. The court determined that he systematically used bank cards belonging to other individuals to pay for fuel, claiming these as his own council member activity expenses. This resulted in a financial loss of approximately 1,113.61 euros to the Prienai District Municipality, which has since been repaid.

The court imposed a fine of 7,500 euros and a three-year ban on holding elected or appointed positions in state or municipal institutions. Vaicekauskas has denied all charges, maintaining that the fuel purchases were related to his official duties. The verdict is not final and can be appealed to the Kaunas Regional Court.
