Lithuanian municipal official fraud convictions

Lithuanian municipal officials have faced legal convictions for fraudulent expense claims involving fuel costs.
In Prienai, Mayor Alvydas Vaicekauskas was found guilty by the Alytus District Court of document forgery, abuse of office, and fraud. Investigations by the Special Investigation Service (STT) revealed that between December 2019 and March 2023, Vaicekauskas used bank cards belonging to others to pay for fuel, subsequently claiming these as official council expenses. The court imposed a 7,500 euro fine and a three-year ban on holding state or municipal positions. Vaicekauskas has denied the charges.
Similarly, Ukmergė District Municipality Council member Algirdas Kopūstas was convicted by the Vilnius Regional District Court for abuse of office, fraud, and document forgery. Between 2019 and 2023, Kopūstas allegedly forged 24 expense reports using other individuals' bank cards to illicitly obtain 3,686.43 euros. He received a 7,000 euro fine and a three-year ban from holding elected or appointed positions.
